What if we cried out to God?

When was the last time you cried out to the Lord? Have you ever done this?

There’s something powerful about lifting your voice in desperation to the only one who can meet your every need.

In psalm 88:9 David wrote, “I call to you every day. I spread out my hands to you.”

Can you picture David lifting both his hands and his voice up to God?

Is this something you do? I can tell you from personal experience, it’s both freeing and enjoyable.

Hebrews 5:7 tells us that even Jesus took part in this.

“During the days of Jesus’ life on earth, he offered up prayers and petitions with fervent cries and tears to the one who could save him from death, and he was heard because of his reverent submission.”

Crying out to God does a few important things:

  • It shows our desperation for God’s divine intervention.
Until we come to the place where we’re completely desperate for him, we’re holding back. Desperation for God opens doors to his working power in ways we can only imagine. We’re nothing without him. But with the Lord, nothing is impossible.
  • It’s part of a process of unconditional surrender.
Part of crying out to God involves surrender. It’s like we come before him and say “I give up. I give in. God, work as only you can. I surrender to you.”  That’s when God’s working power can fully begin.
  • Crying out to God keeps us humble.
There’s something humbling about crying out, and that includes crying out to God. We like to hide our tears. It can be humiliating to show that depth of weakness. Crying out to God reminds us of how nothing we are without him, and how much we need him in our lives.
  • Crying out to the Lord acknowledges our faith in God’s ability to intervene.
No situation is beyond God’s touch. No person is too far from his reach. No hole we may be in is too deep for his saving power. Only God can, but God can.

He is able.

Cry out to the Lord.

Until we come to the place of crying out to Him we hinder his working power.

Lift your voice, your hands and your heart to the one who can make all the difference.
